Calls From Loved One's Voices, Taken Hostage For Money - AI Scam! How It's Done & How To Protect Yourself & Family

Over the past few years, especially these past few months, AI Voice Cloning has exponentially become very realistic.(3) And used to benefit patients suffering from such diseases as A.L.S., Parkinson’s, throat cancer, etc. One such company, Voice Keeper stores patients voices to be used with text to speech software, talking in their own voice when their voice finally gives out. Others like AI memorial service uses people's voices to continue to interact with family even after they've passed away to lessen the pain of their loss..(1) Nevertheless, as wonderful as the above uses are to people with debilitating illnesses, criminals are seeing opportunities to totally rip people off, traumatizing them in the process.

Here Are Some Stories Of Victims & Their Families:

  • Robin and her husband were sleeping when the phone rang twice, it was her mother in law, Mona. Fearing trouble, Robin picked up and was traumatized, hearing her wailing “I can’t do it, I can’t do it.” Then hearing her father in law, Bob saying “'Mona, pass me the phone,' and then 'Get Steve. Get Steve'. Robin quickly woke her husband, Steve When he took the phone, he heard a relaxed male voice—possibly Southern—on the other end of the line. 'You’re not gonna call the police,' the man said. 'You’re not gonna tell anybody. I’ve got a gun to your mom’s head, and I’m gonna blow her brains out if you don’t do exactly what I say.'" Being in law enforcement, Steve used his phone to call his peer, who's experienced in hostage situations, so he could hear all of it. Steve followed the scammer's directions, sending him $500 via Venmo and he heard a woman insist on more money for a trip to unite with the criminal, so another $250 was sent. And with that, the criminal hung up.(1) Traumatized, they called his parents only to find out they were safe in bed, and now, awakened, having no idea what they were talking about. It was an AI fake!
  • Jennifer DeStefano received a call from an unlisted number, and thinking her daughter, Briana was on a ski trip and might be calling, she took the call on her speaker phone: “'Mom, I messed up!' Briana’s voice said, sobbing in her uniquely controlled way. A man with a Spanish accent could be heard telling her, 'Lay down and put your head back.' Then Briana said, 'Mom, these bad men have me. Help me, help me, help me.' A man came on the line while Briana could be heard crying in the background. 'I have your daughter, If you seek any help from anyone, I’ll pump her stomach so full of drugs. And take advantage of her.'”(1) That was an AI fake too!
  • Just a few months earlier, Jennifer's own mother got a scam call with her son's voice asking for money to pay for a hospital bill from a car accident, but she caught on and hung up.
  • Another mother Jennifer knows, mentioned how her cousin had a similar experience 2 weeks earlier, with a call from her daughters phone, thus being scammed $1500.
  • Another friend of Jennifer told her how she got a call from her 9 year old son who said he had been kidnapped, but she knew it was bogus because she had just tucked him in bed.
  • A teacher's aid, RaeLee Jorgensen contacted Jennifer and told her last April while waiting for her kids to get out of school, she received a call from her oldest kid's phone # and sounding like her son, “Hey, Mom, This is Tate.” (using his family nickname). When she asked him if everything was okay, another voice came on: “I have your son and I’m going to shoot him in the head.” She hung up, confirming with Tate's school that he was at school and safe.(1)
  • The Scammers Definitely Messed With The Wrong Momma!

Jennifer DeStefano took it to Congress and even her local AZ State Senator, testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee about her experience; thus prompting Congress to introduce the Quiet Act on 1/29/2024, dealing higher penalties for using AI voice cloning impersonating people, but since introduced it's been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce where it sits waiting.(4) And in Arizona, Jennifer's home state, “Sen. Justine Wadsack (R-Tucson) introduced legislation [Arizona Senate Bill 1599] that would amend state law to make AI an ‘aggravating circumstance’ in sentencing. “What this would do is it would allow AI to be considered a tool, a weapon,” Wadsack said. “What’s happened is the people will get arrested and the police, the sheriff will say, ‘We’ve never seen anything like this before.’ It’s very hard to prosecute when somebody has just mimicked a voice, and what crime is there in that? So it’s starting to introduce this new style of a weaponized tool used to extort, to blackmail, to harass.” (5)

The AI Scamming Is Not Limited To Just Individuals & Families

The scamming isn't just limited to ordinary people, they've effected companies and even countries. At the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, a video was uploaded to social media of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, asking his troops to surrender to the Russians – but it was bogus. And just this past February, a Hong Kong finance company employee was in a video conference with members of his senior staff and was instructed to pay out $25 Million, which turned out to be another AI fraud.

    How Is This Happening?

Sinead Bovell, of Futurist, said “most people in the modern age have some form of online identity and probably spoken in some way, in some aspect that's been recorded [online on social media platforms], especially if you're under the age of 25.” (2) Another expert, Mike Scheumack, the chief innovation officer at IdentityIQ, said “All they need is as little as 3 seconds, 10 seconds is even better to get a very realistic clone of your voice.. The audio sample is then run through an AI program that replicates the voice, allowing the scammer to make it say whatever they type in addition to adding laughter, fear, and other emotions into the cloned voice depending on how the scam is scripted” and freak out the victim family with a fake kidnapping or whatever scam. ”The goal of the scammer is to get you into fight or flight and to create urgency in your mind that your loved one is in some sort of trouble. So the best way to deal with those situations is to hang up and immediately call your loved one to verify if it’s them or not," he explained. (3) You can see a demo of how quickly this can be done here.

So How Do You Keep This From Happening & Implementing A Family Password

Experts warn to keep your social media profiles private whereby you only approve people you know to view. And avoid “phone calls from unfamiliar area codes or international area codes.”(2) Scheumack recommended creating a family password which can be requested to verify if it's really the family member.(4)
